risen with veins
the sound of laughing hidden
in white
dazed
light
see
here are
fingerprints on a plastic table cover chocolate and blood
the shapes of hearts on the floorboards gingerbread black
currant spiders a carpet stain and near the back door
bone meal
drifts like dust
all day feels like
wiping down a constant
cloth or suede a snail-trail in the hand
bacteria a thousand swarms diseases viral spores this
vigilance is
never quite enough
and yet
in the corner of an eye a boy of
two or five or twenty-four is playing
this boy the boy you
made yourself with vitamins and plain domestic breasts
is pulling reaching hurrying his
book down from the shelf
same boy same book a
blue-spined batter a fat arm ripe for biting
fingerprints and bone a fist
a tracery like veins to mark the
life out on his hands
and this my boy is scattered
bricks and debris a basket of toys vests trouser legs with
holes in the knee and grass-slatted teeshirts socks that
almost fit his batman cape his james bond gun his plastic
army man soft cat no tail no whiskers now his
pockets needing emptied at the washing machine have
silver paper chewing gum collecting cards and sticks a
crushed flat daisy string a
